Sports + Remedial

Contrary to popular belief, you certainly do not have to be an athlete, or even take part in a sport to get a sports and remedial massage. Here at Bristol Massage Practice the majority of people we see come in for remedial or therapeutic massage.

This can be anything from long-term recurrent lower back pain, easing pain from tension headaches, to helping recovery from an injury. Massage can help improve posture through improving body awareness, loosening tight muscles, and prescribing exercices. This can help you feeling more confident, in less pain and reduce your risk of future injury. Poor posture often stems from improper use of our bodies. Sitting at a desk for many hours, repetive movements, lack of exercise, imbalance in the body further exacerbated by sustained posture or overuse.

Imbalance in the body is very often the cause for injury, the aim of Sports and Remedial massage is to bring balance back. When there is an injury or sustained lengthening of a muscle, other less efficient muscles will take over the function of the one that is ‘out of action’.These muscles tend to be able to do the same job but not as well and over time are more prone to injury.

The aim of a Sports and Remedial massage is to first address where these imbalances are, and using treatment approaches to correct imbalances. This can be done using a variety of treatment approaches including Muscle Energy Techniques (MET), Soft Tissue Release (STR), Neuromusclular Techniques (NMT), These are all advanced techniques that focus on releasing built up tension and lengthening short tight muscles/or muscle groups.

As much as we would love to tell you a massage a month or even once a week will cure all your ailments, this just isn’t the case. If you want to have long term benefits and see positive changes you will need to put some work in yourself. This is why you will be given personalised exercises to do at home as part of your treatment plan.

Life is increasingly towards being more sedendary. Drive to and from work, sit all day at a desk, sit for dinner, slump on the sofa for an evening of watching telly. Sound familiar? Our bodies like to move, if you could take put aside just 10 minutes of your day for a morning walk, an evening stroll or a bit of yoga. I promise, your body will thank you.

Research has demonstrated that massage therapy is an effective treatment for reducing chronic and acute pain. It can help you recover faster from injuries in the short term and reduce the need for pain medications and surgeries in the long term.
